The STS-1 had halfway decent RS, but the lesser models they fitted to the STS-2 were truly dreadful, pogo like describes them perfectly. Do you remember that the OEM models were all blue and white.

I got a set of Manitou SX (I think) which were air / oil and adjustable. Not too many bike mechs at the time understood suspension, but as a motorcyclist and regular amateur mechanic, I knew about balancing damping and rebound and got my bike set up perfectly... I just never quite took to it.

Anyway, the new owner has polished it up better than new, so he was happy and I love the DeKerf (everyone should have one), so it all ended well.

I still think GT were way ahead of the game back then, with suspension that actually worked and that was not a gimmick.

Oh I cant fault you on that, GT were leaps and bounds better than most. [thumb]

I like the idea of us all owning a Dekerf but they aren't that easy to get hold of these days. I had a hankering for one when I saw Ringo's one but couldn't find anything. Saying that though most of the bikes I like are or want are rarer than an honest politician. [rofl] [rofl] [rofl]

I want a polished RTS1 sooo bad, I would do anything to get my hands on one. I've 2 painted ones but it's just not enough. I remember seeing one in my local bike shop when I was 12, havn't been able to shake that feeling since. The only other full susser I remember hankering after was the Amp Research B4, I want one of those too.

I'm going to be careful not to go off track here, but with DeKerf's you've just got to be in the right place at the right time. As I said, I got my 94 Mountain in a trade, but I also just picked up a 2001 Implant from a guy on the other side of the Mendips who was only selling it because having just broken his right collarbone for the FOURTH time, the bike no longer fitted (he needs a longer reach).

I'll go post a thread on the Mountain present, just to make you feel better.

I only like 90's GTs, new bikes just don't do it for me. It started from oggling GT catalogues in the early to mid 90's, and eventually getting a Tequesta in team scream colours. I worked sats in a bike shop that sold Raleighs, Dawes, Ridgebacks and eventually Saracens, none could match up to top end GTs though. I started putting old bikes together early last year and now I can't stop scanning ebay and gumtree etc for new projects. I visited my local GT dealer last year to see what they were selling now, what a let down. £1000 gets you nothing but tat, lucky if you get Deore, Taiwanese frames and 29" wheels (WTF).
Long gone are the exciting times of mountain biking of the 90's, everything was innovative, ground breaking and new. Now it's rehashed ideas cheaply manufactured in China and then sold for £4000 to someone with too much money (well interest free credit) who just wants something better than everyone else. It's the same with kids to, they all dream about mobile phones or tablets. Christmas day I didn't see one kid out on a new bike, sad.

You are right, the true days of quality mountain bikes is dead. Fortunately people like us keep the bikes alive, suspended in time if you will. I have to say I think that the early Saracen hand built bikes were exceptionally good though to be honest. But like you I preferred the GT bikes and also Cannondale. I only said to my wife today that kids aren't interested in bikes and only phones and games etc. it's a very sad case of affairs and can't understand it. I have five brothers and only one of them likes bikes but nothing like myself.
