Think she deserves a GT at some point. Think you should start saving up now and treat her to an RTS....... Or an STS....... Or a Zaskar........ Or get her all 3 lol.

I take my nephew to the skate park most weekends where he and his mates have stunt scooters, some of the tricks they can pull off are mental. I'm not talking teenagers either, mostly 7 to 12 year olds, it's like the early days of BMXing.

I can agree to some extent when talking rigid frames and longer lasting groupsets but..

Nope, not when talking about bouncy bikes [nono] If for a minute one takes off the rose tinted glasses and forgets nostalgia, a modern full sus mid-range bike will EASILY out perform old high end stuff, granted it may be heavier and far less pretty than say a Manitou FS, but it will work better, work longer without issues and will be dare I say easier to ride? what with far better anti pedal bob inventions etc.

At the end of the day I would take a modern bouncy bike over an old one any day of the week, there, i've said it! [tongue]

Meh! Bloody spoilsport lol.

I think it boils down to the love we have for these bikes. It supersedes the want for a modern bike and the quality that a modern bike gives. The Merida I used in Switzerland was leaps and bounds a better performer than anything I own, BUT......... I wouldn't swap one of mine for the Merida.

Kids are quite fearless these days really so will take extreme chances. I was terrified my parents would catch me smoking let alone doing mad stunts lol.

You're right, in a match up they just can't compete, but that's more down to improvements in suspension components and not new bike design. I was looking at a downhill bike the other day at a shop and it looked good, I was almost tempted, but it's when you take closer look at things you realise the quality isn't there any more. Most of the components are heavily frosted anodised or painted because it's a cheaper way to finish them. The frames are mostly 7000 series aluminium because it's a bit cheaper (to the manufacturer not the buyer), hydroformed alloy frames because CNC takes longer and is more expensive etc .
Don't get me wrong they work better but for nearly 20 years of evolution I'm not that impressed. The price sticks in my throat as well, especially now we so much from China etc. You can source groupsets etc on ebay direct from china and build a bike for less than half price of the ones in the shops. High end bikes in the 90's were expensive because they were expensive to make, that isn't the case any more.
I better shut up now before I fall off my massive soap box[wink]

We are all entitled to our own opinion SKB. Bob and yourself both have very valid points. But the last handmade bike I bought new was a Cannondale scalpel 3000 packed to the hilt with quality. That was in 2005 and apart from the new 29" wheels I can't see any improvements to be honest. What do I know anyway I only ride old junk, errr I mean classic gold lol, lol.

Remember when 500 would get you a half decent brand new bike with decent kit on it. God knows how much you would have to fork out now for a bike of comparable spec. Any way back to gt's my Z is my first gt and the zaskar was/is the only one I really coveted.

This one..... http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/GT-STS-DH-LOBO-Thermoplastic-Carbon-Mountain-Bike-/231125432224?pt=UK_Bikes_GL&hash=item35d02637a0

I'd pay £1,200 to get it if I needed it but that's my cut of point. However at that price with 9 days left its either hit it's near max or its shill bidding.
